Professor Alastair O'Brien
Professor of Hepatology at University College London and a Consultant Hepatologist.
Professor Alastair O'Brien is a Professor of Hepatology and Clinical Director of the Comprehensive Clinical Trials Unit at University College London, and a Consultant Hepatologist at The Royal Free and University College Hospitals.
Professor O'Brien's work aims to improve clinical outcomes from bacterial infection for patients with advanced liver cirrhosis, combining laboratory work and clinical trials.
His work has been published in the world's top journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet and Nature Medicine and he recently completed the largest trial in cirrhosis patients worldwide.
He studied medicine at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals and qualified in 1994. He underwent specialist training in liver disease, gastroenterology and general medicine in London.
Away from medicine, he is a keen runner and dedicated husband and father.
