Historically, the LGBTQ+ community gravitated towards bars and clubs not only for socialising but also for safety. These venues provided refuge from prejudice, allowing individuals to express themselves freely. Over time, alcohol became intertwined with LGBTQ+ social culture, often serving as the backdrop for celebrations and gatherings.  

However, as more people explore low and no-alcohol lifestyles, the demand for alternative LGBTQ+ spaces has been growing. In the past, those who weren’t keen on the clubbing scene, may have struggled to find places to meet other LGBTQ+ individuals. But now, a growing movement is creating spaces where connection isn’t centred around drinking but instead on shared experiences, passions, and community. 

Take a look at some alcohol-free LGBTQ+ spaces in the UK: 

  1. London LGBTQ+ Community Centre – London 
    Opened in December 2021, this community centre hosts a range of events that emphasise inclusivity and offers a sober environment for the community. From morning yoga to ballet, crafting and skills sharing, the London LGBTQ+ Community Centre offers a diverse variety of engaging activities. 
  2. Kafe Kweer – Edinburgh 
    Established as a sober, safe space, Kafe Kweer provides a welcoming environment for the LGBTQ+ community in Edinburgh. The venue hosts a variety of events and activities, from a café and grocery shop to queer art and monthly exhibitions, ensuring inclusivity for all - regardless of age or drinking preference.

  3. Sappho Events – London 
    Founded in 2021, Sappho Events provides a welcoming space for LGBTQ+ women and non-binary people to connect beyond the nightlife scene. They host social events that bring people together through shared interests such as books, film, history, gaming, crafts, and outdoor activities

  4. The Queery – Brighton 
    The Queery is a sober, volunteer-run community space and bookshop in Brighton, dedicated to supporting and uplifting the LGBTQ+ community. With a focus on accessibility and inclusivity, it hosts a variety of events, including book readings, art workshops, and peer support groups. 

  5. Category Is Books – Glasgow 
    This independent LGBTQ+ bookshop and space provides an alcohol-free and inclusive environment for the community. More than just a bookstore, it hosts author talks, poetry nights, and creative workshops, creating a hub for LGBTQ+ storytelling and activism.  

  6. Queers Without Beers at Club Soda – London 
    Since 2017, Queers Without Beers has hosted pop up events nationwide but now have a permanent home at the Club Soda Alcohol-Free Tasting Rooms and Bar in Covent Garden. Once a month, they host a meet-up for the LGBTQ+ community showcasing a wide range of low-alcohol and alcohol-free drinks.  

  7. The Queer Emporium – Cardiff 
    Located in Cardiff, The Queer Emporium is an LGBT+ social enterprise and café that houses over 18 local LGBT+ businesses, serving as a hub for community events, workshops, and social gatherings. While they do serve alcohol, they also offer an extensive range of soft drinks and mocktails.
