New statistics on alcohol related hospital admissions and deaths released
Drinkaware responds to report, ‘Statistics on alcohol’, released by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) today.
The report shows that in 2014-15, there were more than a million alcohol-related hospital admissions in England. In 2014, there were 6,831 alcohol-related deaths, a four per cent increase from the previous year.
Dr John Larsen, Director of Evidence and Impact for alcohol education charity Drinkaware, said: “It is worrying to see that large numbers of people are being admitted to hospital, and that dying from alcohol-related illnesses has increased.
“This report also shows that men are much more likely to be admitted to hospital and die of alcohol-related conditions. This is supported by our own research which shows that alcohol consumption is higher, and more frequent, among men and older age groups [1].
“The new government guidelines recommend that people do not drink more than 14 units per week and if people do choose to drink, then it’s best to spread it evenly over three days or more.”
Drinkaware has an app which can help people change the way they drink by tracking and calculating their unit intake: https://www.drinkaware.co.uk/tools/app/
